Tip of the Day:

Leave a toothbrush at work in your desk so you can brush your teeth after lunch. What’s your favorite way to keep your mouth feeling fresh during the day?

Recycled Resolutions

Christmas has come and gone and now New Year’s Eve is just around the corner. One of the top ten most common resolutions for 2010 was to “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle”. Well here is one way to say good bye to Christmas and meet one more resolution before 2012. Recycle your Tree! It’s a free service with three locations to drop your tree. Here is the link of the City of Loveland website for more information. Hope this helps: http://www.ci.loveland.co.us/index.aspx?page=1115

Christmas music is playing, the stores are packed, and the stockings are hung by the chimney with care…yup, it’s that time of year again. The holiday season is in full swing and though it comes the same time every year, it still seems to catch me off guard. There are gifts to buy, cookies to bake, trees to decorate, and parties to enjoy. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. How do we truly enjoy the season? Well, though it’s different for everyone, I took a couple of ideas that may be fun to take a look at.
1. Create a Gingerbread House with your family. This is more a challenge than anything. I was surprised to find some gingerbread house competitions and the amazing creations that won. Here are some images to aspire to. But the process itself can be great. Feel free to bring in a couple photos, I’d love to see how they turn out!

2. Check out Amazing Christmas Lights. Grab some hot cocoa and plan an evening to drive around and see some great light displays. The Greeley Grizwald house is one of my favorites. With over 135,000 lights all coordinated to favorite Christmas songs, this is one must see of the holiday season. Here is the link to the family’s website if interested. http://mike.btfh.net/index.htm

3. Watch a Classic Holiday Movie. Here are some great ones:
• A Christmas Story, 1983
• Miracle on 34th Street, 1947
• How the Grinch Stole Christmas, 1966
• It’s A Wonderful Life, 1946

Between the present wrapping and carol singing, I hope everyone truly enjoys this holiday season.

Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder

Women in Japan are not only changing their shoes or clothes based on fashion but now they’re altering their teeth. Through a process called “yaeba” women are paying to have imperfect teeth that include a “snaggleteeth” or a “fang” look. Even if their teeth are straight, most will pay for alterations. What could cause the fashion savvy country to change their smiles? Well crooked teeth in Japan are considered beautiful, youthful, and the imperfection of smile is more appealing to men.

While this may seem odd, the supermodel Tyra Banks also supports changing teeth structure based on the current fashion trends. While hosting America’s Next Top Model, she encouraged a contestant to widen her gap. Other past fashion models have also popularized this gap tooth look. For example, Lauren Hutton led the “gap craze” and was featured in Vogue Magazine over 25 times. Currently, Georgia Jagger, and Lara Stone are creating a new look within the fashion industry of a gap toothed smile.

We all have different ideas about what constitutes a beautiful smile. My goal is not to impose any set ideal for what your smile should look like. Rather, I want your style and values to be reflected in the mirror when you smile.

Dry Mouth in Adults

Many adults experience dry mouth, a sensation cause by the lack of saliva the mouth produces. During the day is the most noticeable time to recognize how dry and unpleasant the dry mouth feeling is. And during the day is also when we have the most control over managing the feeling. However, what many do not know is that dry mouth is actually worse at night and can have damaging, long lasting consequences. For instance, a recent study done shows that dry mouth during the night can significantly heighten the amount of bacteria in a person’s mouth. Once this happens, chances of caries (destruction of the teeth), gingivitis, and halitosis (bad breath) are all extremely probable. The good news is that XyliMelts for Dry Mouth helps relieve this severe dry mouth affect after sleeping. Many patients said that it not only helped diminish the dry feel but their mouths were moist when waking up. I’ve attached the link for the OraHealth Company if you are interested in the XyliMelts. If there are any questions about this, always feel free to ask me.

A Tooth is Worth a Thousand Words

The traditional phrase of “A smile is worth a thousand words” was challenged as news stories flooded the media about a tooth. On Saturday, November 5th at an auction in England, former Beatle musician John Lennon had a tooth sell for about $31,000. Many years ago, when the tooth fell out, Lennon asked his housekeeper to give it to her daughter who was a Beatle’s Fan. Now, years later, the tooth which was only expected to sell for $16,000 sold to a Canadian dentist for nearly twice that amount. The valuable lesson here…take care of your teeth now because you don’t know how much they may be worth one day.

From Bitter to Sweet

I recently heard a joke about a young boy who is taken to the dentist. He was found to have a cavity that needed to be filled. “Now, what kind of filling would you like for that tooth?” asked the dentist. The young boy looked at him and said, “Chocolate please.”
Unfortunately, for many adults and children, this “sweet” scenario is not always associated with the dentist. Many of us have not had great or even bearable experiences. The process of a cleaning or tooth filling might have been uncomfortable or the recovery and healing process was painful. These bitter events have lead to a valid fear of dental care. However, this bitter taste left after each experience does not need to last, nor should it. If I could provide chocolate fillings, I would. However, I’ve come up with something better and “sweeter” for my patients, and that’s building comforting relationships based on trust. For each patient, the goal is to feel comfortable throughout the entire process. From enjoying a cup of gourmet coffee and talking with me one on one to your dental procedure, you should feel calm and comforted the whole way through. It truly makes my day when I’m able to sit down with a fearful patient and give them the comforting support and assurance that we can help them. For me, that is the “sweetest” part of my day. Like the little boy in the joke, we all wish for chocolate fillings. But in reality, we can all have “sweet” results.
