Sedation Dentistry For Dental Phobia

See How You Can Relax In The Dentist’s Chair

If you suffer from dental anxiety or phobia, even simple checkups and teeth cleanings from the dentist can be intimidating. And if you need more complex treatments, such as a filling, crown, dental implant, or tooth extraction, it may seem nearly impossible to get the care you need for a healthy mouth.

But at the Center for Advanced Dentistry, Dr. Andrew Howard is here to help. With sedation dentistry in Loveland, CO, from our team, you can overcome your anxiety, eliminate pain and discomfort, and restore your oral health.

The Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry

  • Reduce fear and anxiety – The most significant benefit of sedation dentistry is that it can help you overcome fear, anxiety, and intimidation when you visit the dentist. With sedation dentistry from Dr. Howard, you can get the dental care you need with less stress and discomfort.
  • Helps with fear of needles and gag reflex – Along with dental anxiety, sedation dentistry can help you overcome your fear of needles, which is super helpful if you need to be numbed for your treatment. It also inhibits the gag reflex, making it easier to receive treatment on your rear teeth.
  • Stay more comfortable during long visits – It can be tough to stay still and hold your mouth open for multiple hours during long treatment sessions. With sedation, you can sit back, relax, and feel more at ease during long or complex dental procedures at our office.

  • Enjoy more efficient care – Since you’ll feel more comfortable and cooperative, sedation dentistry also helps dentists like Dr. Howard deliver faster, more efficient care during your visit.
  • Take control of your oral health – With dental sedation, you can stop avoiding the dentist, and you can take control of your oral health. Whether you suspect you have multiple cavities, you believe you have an infected tooth, or you’ve lost one or more teeth, sedation can help you overcome your fear, get the dental care you need, and enjoy a healthy, strong, and confident smile once again.

Understanding Common Dental Sedation Methods

At the Center for Advanced Dentistry, we offer a wide variety of sedation options that can be customized based on your dental needs, your level of fear and anxiety about seeing the dentist, and a wide variety of other factors. Wondering what your options are at our office? Here’s an overview of the most common dental sedation methods.

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) sedation

Laughing gas sedation is a great option for patients who just need a little bit of help relaxing in the dentist’s chair. For example, it’s a good choice for fillings, crowns, and other basic treatments that aren’t very invasive.

In this method of sedation, Dr. Howard will deliver a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide to your lungs through a nose mask. Once you breathe it in, it will take effect immediately. You’ll feel calm, relaxed, and a bit “floaty” and disconnected from your surroundings. You will remain fully conscious and aware of what’s happening around you, though.

One of the best things about laughing gas is that it wears off after only a few minutes. You will be able to drive yourself back home and get back to your normal routine almost immediately. This makes it a great choice if you have a busy schedule.

Oral conscious sedation

For patients who need a deeper level of sedation, oral conscious sedation is an ideal choice. It’s often used for dental implants, wisdom teeth extractions, and similar oral surgeries. In this method of sedation, you will take some sedative pills about an hour before your appointment.

Once the sedative medications take effect, you will feel very relaxed, groggy, and confused. You may also fall asleep and forget most of what happens during your visit at the Center for Advanced Dentistry. However, our team can still wake you up, and you’ll still be able to respond to commands and questions.

IV “twilight sedation”

This is the most popular type of sedation at our office, especially for complex surgical treatments like gum grafts, bone grafts, dental implants, and full-mouth restoration with All-On-Four. IV sedation (also sometimes called “twilight sedation”) is administered by a trained anesthesiologist who will monitor you carefully during the entire procedure.

‍With IV sedation at the Center for Advanced Dentistry, you’ll be able to sleep through your entire visit. You will have no memory of the procedure and when you wake up the procedure will be completed, and you will be pain-free and comfortable!

General anesthesia

General anesthesia is the deepest level of sedation and is also provided by our in-office anesthesiologist.  With general anesthesia, you will be completely unconscious, and a breathing tube is used.  This type of anesthesia can be used for those with more complex needs or for longer procedures.
